Ok folks. This has nothing to do with cocktails. Unless you put it under the heading of Things You Watch That Require a Pegu to Keep Your Nerves From Fraying.
I refer of course, to this.
Folks, if you aren’t watching this guy play, you are missing one of the great eras in sport. A giant walks the Earth, and his name is Roger Federer.
How good is he? Today he won his twelfth Grand Slam Title. It was his tenth consecutive grand slam final. He was playing the best young star in the game, on that player’s best surface. He played a very tight, and (for him) bad brand of tennis. He openly admits to having the cold sweats and the shakes before the match. And he won the U.S. Open in straight sets.
The man deserves to be thought of in the same breath as Babe Ruth and Muhammad Ali… and for that matter, um, Paul Bunyan and John Henry. OK, so they were all Americans, and the Federer isn’t. Please. The man is so good, he take the time to morph himself into a representative of whatever country he is in. He wears a blazer instead of a warmup on court in Britain. In the U.S, you hear him yelling Come On!
at tense points, despite the fact that English is his third language. In France, he… well, he loses to Raphael Nedal. But that makes the myth more mythical. Achilles isn’t Achilles without his Heel, n’est pas?
He says things about his competition that from any other mouth would be bulletin board material—utter bravado. He says the same thing and people marvel at his humility!
In the Quarter Finals, Roger played Andy Roddick, the best American in the game right now, and a former U.S.Open winner who’s younger than Le Fed. Andy played the best tennis anyone has seen him play in his life, and Darth Federer
ripped his still beating heart out of his chest and served it to him for an ace.
The broadcasters today were seeking confirmation today that he is actually a carbon-based life-form. They actually wanted to know if he has a navel.
I don’t care it you don’t watch tennis, watch this guy. He is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon. We’ll be back shortly with cocktail-based discussion, but for now, I need another drink.
