One tip for making the cold process grenadine via the shake method that worked really good for me is this. Combine the sugar and juice and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds to a minute then let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes. Repeat one or two more times as necessary. I found that when you shake the mixture the sugar becomes somewhat suspended and will dissolve on its own during the time when you're not shaking.

I'll also vouch that this grenadine is so much better than Rose's that I would consider the two to not really even be the same ingredient. It's well worth the time to make and any extra freezes up nicely.

Ah, to live in a state with available inventory!
Here in Ohier, we have one Calvados, for $42.50. Of course, this is probably the $30 stuff you are buying in NH, if Laird's is only $9.99....
That said, I repeat what I said about Applejack vs. Calvados. The neutral spirits don't bug me at all. Applejack just a has a bit of a 'fun' personality. The Calvados is pretty swell stuff for other uses, but it simply is too big and bold and too many other things than just the 'appleness' for the Jack Rose.
I'll have to be on the lookout for cheaper Calvados, to see what it's like. No (real) pretension need apply here! We are mixing a McTini after all.

Applejack is great for its price (we have found it as cheap as $9.99 in NH state liquor stores) but it is only 35% apple brandy with 65% being grain neutral spirits which dilutes down the appleness (but keeps down the cost).

Calvados for mixing can be found in the $20-30 range. We can find 3-4 levels of Morin at $20, $30, and up. The $30 range is what we use for cocktails and the $20 was great for our punches (and would work well in a drink like the Jack Rose).
