[...] Tiki centered drinks are notorious for employing this method of flavor and texture enhancement; the Jet Pilot, the Zombie Punch and even the humble Mai Tai are all great examples of how this is achieved. [...]

[...] The Jet Pilot is an oft-ignored “tiki” drink for reasons that are all too understandable once you’ve perused its list of ingredients: it’s downright deadly. Three different kinds of rum; absinthe; very little else. It’s sweetness is is a source of unending joy — one could drink this from a sippy cup and feel a grade schooler all over again — but its sting leaves a mark; and the high it provides is both clouded with haze and unervingly hightened (due in no small part to the absinthe). To consume it is to celebrate the act of drinking socially, of defying convention and partying until dawn; to finish it is to touch something primal and the slightest bit unhinged — this drink is associated with voodoo practices and with good reason: it exposes morality instead of distracting from it. Which makes it an ideal pair with Drake’s grim reaper radio smash — it too is a harbinger of terror and parinoia served in the comforting clothes of club culture. But because we don’t want you to fall too far down the rabbit hole, we reccomend enjoying this pairing on a night when you’re eager to confront to state of your life with the warts exposed. It takes a brave soul to stare his or herself in the mirror — with this team by your side, you can bust a move while you do. Find Out More About This Drink! [...]

Doug,

Love the garnish. The Jet Pilot is definitely the exotic cocktail I turn to when people ask me what a tiki drink is.

You must use a straw for sipping! Are you starting with crushed ice? And no, 4oz is not enough for this beast :)

I had one of these a week ago here in Boston (at Drink). The ice was malletized (it was in a canvas bag).

Very tasty, indeed. Mine followed having been served an Airbag.

Hey everyone! Craig doesn't bother to use the blender on his Jet Pilots!

I'll bet he doesn't keep little airliners around to garnish with either....

Don't tell anyone, but when I make mine, I skip the blender altogether. I shake the hell out everything in a shaker w/ ice and strain into a DOF glass filled with crushed ice. I think it concentrates the flavors a bit more that way.

Thanks. Like many of my ideas, it just took shape. Then I had to drive around town to find a tiny toy plane. Then I had to drive around town to find a glass large enough to sink said plane in!
