This is EXACTLY the kinda of post I needed. Sites like yours (especially yours) got me interested in starting my own cocktail blog after having worked on the sales and marketing side of the industry for a few years. I've been using a combination of PR photos and a few self shot "better-than-I-expected" shots but finally invested in a upscale DSLR camera to take better shots while traveling and want my blog to benefit as well. Thanks for the tips. Check me out at Intoxicology.net if you ever get the chance. Cheers !

Michael,

Thanks for the insight. I've noticed something along these lines myself. I have an old Canon DSLR with a very good lens, and the pix I get from it are pretty damn good compared to my much newer cameras with their lesser lenses. However, the lens will only take you so far before the difference in sensors and other capabilities start to make you pick your poison depending on the shot.

(Of course, ALL my shots suck compared to the good stuff out there, so take this FWIW)

I know I'm late on this game, but thanks for this post--some interesting tips.

I would like to add to future readers that having a great camera really isn't the key. A sharp prime lens will serve you so much better--either a 100mm macro, 85mm portrait, or even the 50mm prime (which can often be had for peanuts). Lenses have a surprising large amount to do with how much color pops out of the subject. A good sensor behind the lens is important, but most DSLRs will do an admirable job with the right lens.

I'm a huge fan of Sara's work and recently contacted her to tell her that she was an inspiration. I too shoot cocktails professionally and photographers like Sara push me to do better. Great interview Doug, and thanks for sharing Sara.
Also, highly recommend Scott's book.

Nice post and interview Doug. Great information.

Guess I'm going to have to be less lazy and start using RAW images on my camera.

What i realy like with these photos here is the light and the style. I`m totally clear about one thing, i really really need to get myself a decent camera! No matter how hard you try, if the camera is shit you will be limited and will not be able to use your creativity as you wish and that´s not fun!
