Digg and Technorati have never done anything for me, either.
I do get some StumbleUpon hits, usually when Tiare (I think) first hits it.
At any rate, I don’t know beans about StumpleUpon, maybe someone else (I wonder who I could be thinking of?) could do an Inside Blogball post as well, talking about how to promote using StumbleUpon…..

Excellent post, Doug. I’d like to second Gabe’s points about social networking tools. I’ve never gotten much traction with Digg or Reddit or any of those, but Stumbleupon has sent my site tens of thousands of visitors over the past year. It’s easy enough to submit your own posts, get active in the community, and watch the pageviews climb. I think you just have to pick the posts you submit, make sure it’s worthwhile.

And I agree that pictures and other devices to break up a post, cheesecake or not, are critical to keep people reading. Nothing will make someone click off your page faster than just seeing a big block of text with no breaks in it.

The other thing I’ve noticed that generates traffic: LISTS. Numbered lists (like…hey, this post!) are perfect for the short attention span of the interwebs, and they go crazy for them. If it’s a “Top Whatevers” list, so much the better, as people love arguing what should be the best or worst of anything.

I don´t really have a blog (yet), but I can see this info coming handy pretty soon.
Also, almost all of it can be placed outside the cocktails community and in any kind of blog.

I agree about the distaste with asking for links. HOWEVER, there are different ways to do it, that make it more appropriate and less grubby.
First off, the idea, especially among colleagues, is that you are giving a special heads up that something is of interest to THEM. If they find it useful to use, great.
Second, when reaching beyond your own circle, the idea is to make those folks aware of your existence in the first place. I’m not talking about asking for linkbacks, or blogroll listings. I’m talking about telling blogger A about a post of yours that they might find useful, but which does not reference them at all.
Finally, I think you should tell people when you do link them, since I often miss that I’ve been linked unless it produces a lot of traffic, or Google notices it, which it often does NOT.

Doug, a great post. The only thing I take issue with, personally, is asking for links.

I’ve made it a policy never to do so and, thus, I feel more honored when they actually arrive. I’m also far more open to adding someone if I merely see a linkback to my site from theirs one day versus an email bludgeoning me with guilt.

I also think social networking sites such as Facebook, StumbleUpon, and Twitter (ugh) are important tools in a smaller community such as ours. EVERYONE has a political bent and a much smaller percentage of people are interested in drinking, much less cocktails. So I think those tools are much more important to us than they are to a political blogger.
